Prompt: Write a short story about a man who discovers a magical portal

Royce was going about his usual day, doing what he loved most: playing video games and hanging out with his friends. But as he was getting ready to leave for the day, he realized he had forgotten his backpack at home. Royce decided to take a quick detour to his friend’s house to grab it and when he arrived, he saw a bright light in the distance. Curiosity getting the better of him, Royce walked towards the light and stepped through a portal.
When he emerged, he was in a fantastical world with beautiful creatures running around. He followed a trail until he came to a door. He tried to open it but it was locked. Suddenly, a voice called out to him.
“Welcome to my realm, young one. If you follow my commands, you will be able to explore and discover all that is hidden here.” Royce was intrigued and decided to take the offer. The voice instructed him to fetch an item from the other side of the door and he set off.
Royce journeyed through different gardens and forests, encountering different creatures along the way. He eventually located the item and returned to the voice. “Well done, young one. You have proven yourself worthy and may now enter my realm freely.” Royce was excited to learn more and thanked the voice before entering the portal himself.
Now that he was a regular visitor, he learned about the creatures and the secrets of the realm. He even started to make friends with some of the inhabitants and they would greet him when he returned home from his adventures. His friends and family were amazed at the stories he would tell them about his trips to the magical land.
