Prompt: Write a short story about a man who discovers a magical portal

It was a dark and stormy night, and Dan was feeling a little down. He’d had a frustrating day at work, and was looking for something to take his mind off of it. He was walking down the street, when he saw a strange light in the distance. Approaching it, he found that it was a portal. Tentatively stepping through, he found himself in a fantastical world. There were trees with strange fruit, rivers of blue liquid, and castles with turrets the height of the tallest buildings in his town.
As he wandered around, he found a small house with a sign that said “Welcome to my home. Please enjoy your stay.” Inside, he found a young girl who introduced herself as Rose. She said that she had been watching him since he first stepped through the portal, and that she was glad he had found her home. She offered to show him around, and he agreed.
As they explored the wonders of the world, Dan gradually realized that he was no longer alone in it. He met other people who had also found their way to the portal, and they all began to build a community. They shared stories, and traded goods and services. They even founded a small government, and Dan was elected President.
Although it had been a turbulent few years, the people of the magical world were happy and content. Dan was proud to have led them, and he knew that he would never forget the time he spent there.
