Prompt: Write a short story about a man who discovers a magical portal
Response:

Gregory opened his eyes to see the familiar ceiling of his home. It was morning and his wife was already up and about, preparing for the day. Gregory sat up and rubbed his eyes, trying to adjust to the bright light. Glancing out his window, he saw the grass was still green and the leaves were still on the trees. It was still autumn. Gregory sighed and got out of bed, making his way to the kitchen.

“Morning, sweetheart,” he greeted his wife as he kissed her on the cheek.

She turned to him and smiled. “Morning, love. How was your sleep?”

“Good,” Gregory lied. He had been restless all night, tossing and turning in bed. Something wasn’t right.

“Well, I’m going to go get ready for work. I’ll see you later,” she said, turning to head to her bedroom.

Gregory took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He had a feeling something was going to happen today. He didn’t know what, but he knew it was important. Gregory grabbed his still-fully-packed suitcase and headed for the door.

He stepped outside and was greeted by the bright sunshine. The leaves on the trees sparkled in the sunlight and the wind whipped through the bare branches. Gregory took a deep breath and closed his eyes, suddenly feeling at peace.

Suddenly, Gregory felt a tingling sensation throughout his body. He opened his eyes to see a portal opening in front of him. He stepped through and found himself in a different world.

The sky was a deep blue and the grass was a lush green. There were trees towering above him and the air was scented with flowers. Gregory took a step forward and gasped. In front of him was a beautiful lake. He could see the fish swimming below the surface and the water was so clear he could see the bottom.

Gregory felt a warm smile cross his face and he walked towards the lake. He could feel the happiness and peace washing over him and he knew this was where he was meant to be. He could feel himself beginning to heal and he knew this was the place where he would find his true purpose.
