1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
2/3 cup cocoa powder
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup milk


1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour one 9-inch cake pan.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter and cocoa until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition until well blended. Beat in vanilla.

4. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat until well blended after each addition. Pour batter into prepared cake pan.

5. Bake for 28 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool cake in the pan for 10 minutes; then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
