1 3/4 cups (420 grams) all-purpose flour

1/2 cup (120 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup (165 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature

2 cups (256 grams) granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour an 8×8 inch baking pan.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour.

4. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the cake. Cool cake in pan for 10 minutes; then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
