Prompt: Write a short story about a man who discovers a magical portal

In his twenties, John was always on the lookout for something new to explore. One day, he stumbled upon a strange portal in the woods. It looked like a door in a tree, and when he touched it, it opened. John stepped through, and when he came back out, the portal had disappeared. He didn’t know what to make of it, but he was fascinated by the idea of discovering new things.

Over the next few weeks, John explored the portal more and more. He found that he could go to different places in the world by entering the portal. Eventually, he decided to go to a place he had always dreamed of visiting: his childhood home. When he arrived there, he was surprised to find that everything had changed since he had last been there. The town looked different, the people looked different, and the landscape was different. But the most surprising discovery was that his parents had died a few years earlier, and he had never known about it.

The experience of visiting his childhood home was bittersweet. John was glad to have discovered the portal, but he also felt a sense of loss for the life he might have had if he had known about his parents. He knew that he would never forget his trip to his childhood home, and he would always remember the magical experience of visiting it through the portal.
